Most IELTS and PTE classes bring together students preparing for different purposes — migration, undergraduate, general. At Lokaartha, our focus is different. We are building a learning environment around research students.
Our current students and applicants come from countries including:
and we continue to work with research applicants from other countries as well.
Our bigger goal — Build a stronger research community
Our goal is not simply to help you obtain an IELTS or PTE score. Our bigger goal is to build a stronger research community. We want students preparing for research degrees to meet others who understand the same journey, exchange ideas, discuss research interests and, where there is genuine academic fit, explore opportunities to collaborate. Your PhD journey does not have to be completely individual.
Our IELTS and PTE instructor has more than 16 years of teaching experience. The course is personalised according to your current English level, target score, weaknesses and application timeline. The usual preparation period is approximately 5 to 6 weeks, although the actual duration depends on your ability and progress. Some students may need more time. Some may be ready sooner. We do not believe every student should be pushed through exactly the same schedule.
Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking with particular attention to skills required by applicants preparing for postgraduate study.
Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, with focused preparation around PTE question types and your individual areas of difficulty.
Research applicants need more than test taking strategies. You need to communicate ideas clearly, discuss academic background and explain research interests.
Many students understand English reasonably well but struggle when speaking or writing under pressure. Structured opportunities to practise and improve.
Before booking an English test, check whether you actually need one. Depending on your previous education, university, programme and other circumstances, you may be eligible for an English language exemption.
For example, some universities may accept previous study completed in English or qualifications from particular countries. However, completing a Master's in an English speaking country does not automatically mean that every university will waive IELTS or PTE.
Requirements can vary between universities and programmes, and research degree applicants may have additional or different requirements. That is why we recommend checking specific requirements of your target university before paying for an English test. If you do need IELTS or PTE, we can help you prepare.
There is no universal answer. The right choice depends on your target universities and programmes. Before choosing a test, check:
If you are unsure, check your target programme requirements before registering for a test.

We want this class to become more than a place where students prepare for an English examination. We want it to become a place where research students meet each other.
If two students discover that their research interests overlap, they may discuss potential collaboration. If someone is struggling with an academic problem, another student may have experience that helps. If someone is preparing for a PhD application in a completely different country, they may still have useful experience to share.
This is the kind of academic environment we want to build at Lokaartha.
You do not have to decide immediately. Join our free 2 day orientation class first. Meet the instructor. Experience the teaching. Meet other research applicants. See how the online class works. Then decide whether you would like to continue. There is no pressure to join after the orientation.
